Our latest Unit of Inquiry is Beliefs.

The central idea is:
Rituals, traditions and artifacts can help people sustain and express their cultural beliefs and values.

So to start, we investigated the meaning of rituals and traditions. We also thought about how they connect to our own families.

Rituals and Traditions: What do these words mean? How are these words different? How do they look in my family?

  • For Easter, we attend church services, sometimes at dawn. We praise the death and rising of Jesus. Easter dinner we have roasted ham and other side dishes. This is done with our nuclear family, since the rest of the family is so far away.
  • For Thanksgiving, we prepare a roast turkey, stuffing, and other sides. We eat a lot. Afterward we may begin to sing Christmas carols for the first time.
  • For Christmas, we eat a meal similar to Thanksgiving, but with ham instead of turkey, or maybe a beef roast. We used to also prepare a Jamaican drink: Hibiscus flower juice. The red color of the drink is symbolic of Christmas and of the blood of Jesus.
  • Birthday celebrations come with a cake, maybe a party, and the ability to make a wish for a special gift or experience. When I was a child we did not have a lot of money, so birthdays were extra-special.
  • Celebrate Easter
  • Celebrate Thanksgiving Day
  • Celebrate Christmas
  • Celebrate Birthdays
  • Honor children when they turn 16 and get a driver’s licence
  • Honor children when they turn 18
  • Children celebrate when they turn 21

Are they the same? why?
I do not believe that rituals and traditions are the same. I think that a tradition is a cultural value, something that you honor in your family life. The way that you honor it, the process, is a ritual. For example, it could be my tradition to honor my child when they turn 16 years of age. The way that I do that--a fancy party, with fancy dress, food, and music, is the ritual that I observe in honor of that tradition.
